ING New York Marathon Long Training Run #2
I am so glad that I was in town for this! It was great to be inspired this morning by so many runners who are all reaching for the same goal…26.2 miles. Though we were a mix of elite runners and slowpokes like me I did feel like we were all in it together.
In comparison to my 5 miles yesterday which were run in a sweatbox and a downpour these 13 miles today were run in beautiful weather. Honestly this was the first morning there was a little bit of chill in the air. NYRR sets up pace groups and I was a bit silly and got in the 11 min/mile pace group even though most of my marathon training runs I’ve done at at least 12. Oddly enough I stayed with my pace group for a while, Harlem Hill felt great and then at about mile 6 I got a stitch in my side which has been bothering me the last few days.
I took a moment and slowed down a bit then kept going. Soon I was already done with one lap around the park. I grabbed some Gatorade at the transverse and then started on Lap #2. At this point I was really feeling good and I had a few people that I kept running into which was fun. Though I slowed down a bit in my second lap I felt sold in miles 10 and 11. 12 and 13 were not easy. I spent too much time at the transverse and to be honest wanted to call it a day. I have realized my body does not like stopping and walking. I am much better if I just slow my run down a bit when I get water or only walk for 30 seconds…anything more than that and getting my legs running again is really painful. I’ll have to keep that in mind.
So excited that for the rest of the weekend I can sit on my booty and relax. Tomorrow my puppy is going to get a nice 5 mile walk which I think my body will enjoy after getting pounded today. Marathon training is getting easier.
Up This Week:
Monday: 4 miles
Tuesday: 1 mile warm-up, 6 X 4min hard, 3 min easy, 1 mile cool down
Wednesday: Bikram Yoga
Thursday: 1 mile warm-up, 5 miles moderate
Friday: 14 mile long run
Saturday: 2 miles easy
Sunday: Rest (flight to North Dakota!)
As you can see I am changing things up a bit and doing my long run on Friday. The reason I’m changing things around is because I have some friends coming in for my friend’s baby shower Saturday afternoon and I’m thinking that we may go out Saturday night. I can’t imagine drinking anything after 14 miles…yikes so I am going to make sure I get that out of the way before the fun begins.
